Prolific producing grape type tomato. Determinate, bush growing tomato (staking is recommended as developing fruits will weigh down the supporting branches). Fruits can be vine ripened weighing approximately 10-14 grams. Excellent shelf-life. Matures in 80-85 days.

History of the Plant

(Solanum lycopersicon) This oblong Thompson grape shaped tomato must have had its origins in Hawaii…( by the name). Komohana is a research station site for the University of Hawaii, but beyond that Joe does not have much historical information on the origin of this tomato. It does well in the hot humid tropics, and it should do well in the southern states or anywhere that tomatoes thrive. Reputed to be very productive. The small bush plant is said to get so loaded with fruit that it needs support. Fruits are small about ½ ounce in size.

Growing Media



Seedlings raised in flats or peat pots are transplanted to the garden 3 to 5 weeks after seeding. Space plants 15 inches apart in rows spaced 24 to 30 inches apart. As the plants grow, remove all side shoots arising from the leaf axils, leaving only the central shoot. Place support stakes, 4 to 5 feet long, next to the seedlings and tie the vines to the stakes at 12- to 15-inch intervals with twistems, raffia or other tying material.



Apply well-rotted manure (preferably fumigated) or compost at the rate of 10 to 20 pounds per 100 square feet of garden area, and work into the soil before planting.

Make a second fertilizer application after first fruit set, using 10-30-10 or 10-20-20, fertilizer. Apply ¼ -cupful of fertilizer in a circle 6 to 8 inches from the base of the plants and 3 to 4 inches deep. Apply additional fertilizer once every two weeks after harvest begins.




Irrigate an average of 1- to 2-times per week during periods of little or no rainfall before fruit set. After fruit set, 2- to 3-irrigations per week with heavy soaking (not light sprinkling) will be necessary for most soils and localities. Plants grown in containers will need watering at least once a day after plants set fruit.



Russet Mites: The bottom leaves will turn yellow and stems will have a bronze color, and under severe infestation can defoliate plants. Spraying with sulfur can bring them under control.

Fruit flies: Covering fruit clusters with paper bags can minimize damage. The use of Methyl Eugenol baits can attract male Oriental Fruit Flies and minimize breeding.

Whiteflies: Many tiny white flies cause black sooty mold on plants and can also transmit serious virus diseases. Using insecticidal soaps such as Safers Soap mixed with Diatomaceous Earth at the first sighting of these pests will help to keep them in check.

Treehoppers: These are found on the stems and can create large colonies. The immature tree hoppers are brown and have spines, while the adults are green and larger with three-sided heads. Sprays of Neem and Safers Soap should bring them under control.




The fruits should be harvested no sooner than the pink or breaker stage when pink color appears on the bottom of the fruits. Fruits picked three-fourths to fully ripe will taste better than those picked less ripe. On the average, 2 to 3 harvests per week will be necessary.




They are also a great source of vitamin C, potassium, folate, and vitamin K.

Carbs comprise 4% of raw tomatoes, which amounts to fewer than 5 grams of carbs for a medium specimen (123 grams).

Tomatoes are a good source of fiber, providing about 1.5 grams per average-sized tomato.

Most of the fibers (87%) in tomatoes are insoluble, in the form of hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin.



Observational studies have noted links between tomatoes — and tomato products — and fewer incidences of prostate, lung, and stomach cancers.

Tomatoes are considered beneficial for skin health.

Increasing evidence from clinical trials suggests that supplementing with lycopene may help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol.
